Press cut "Francesco Scavetta propose a personal approach to contemporary dance, based on releasetechnique and contact-improvisation, influenced by his experience as a dancer and choreographer and by his practice of tai chi chuan, that links a deep transformation of the body to a delicate poetic of the movement." Danza&danza
The teaching project "A surprised body" started in the 2005, in Norway, and continued, throughout the 2006/2010, with workshops in: Italy, Croatia, Cuba, France, Colombia, Venezuela, Estonia, Latvia, Argentina, UK, Holland, Republic of San Marino, Austria, Finland, Lebanon, India, Belgium, Russia and Canada.
Already as a title, "A surprised body" defines, for me, a metaphorical space. The image of a body in a constant alert, able to surprise himself, escaping from a habitual daily body and from any kind of routine. A body more focused on reacting, than on acting. More on receiving, than on doing. I believe that in dance, it's more important to be able to forget, than to remember. To concentrate on the reaction forces us to avoid mental approaches. The goal is to let the movement to cross freely through the body, with isolation in the limbs and organic innovation. I need to become friendly with my body to have more freedom in my creativity. I am, personally, getting more and more interested in the process of the learning. In the different way of articulating the transmission of the information. In how, as a pedagogue, I can be able to reach the different individuals, present in a class, often so different, in a organic and personal way. And to communicate with them. The mental understanding is not necessarily a physical understanding. My aim is to direct the attention of everyone, to the approach to the "learning process": to question how to learn "how to learn". For me a workshop is an occasion of research.
The physical training aims at awakening our awareness and sensitivity and at creating occasions for discoveries. The basic class concentrates on centering and gravity. Activating the center, as engine of the movement, we will aim in letting the movement to cross freely, throughout the body, with isolation in the limbs. Harmonizing the movement with our breathing, we will release contractions in the joints, allowing the sense of the gravity to be a constant part of our awareness. We will work on emphasizing antagonists to our movement, to explore the suspension in the fall or the extension in the reaching, and to wide the transformations of the central body and the shifts in the dynamics. Through exercises and games, focusing on attention and reaction, we will underline that the pathway to an interesting creative moment is rooted in mental relaxation and a physical openness: a willingness to play, being totally engaged in what we do and see a moment to its end.
